Jesus is the all time greatest authority on love. He showed His love sacrificially on the cross. He also made this difficult command to His followers: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you” (Luke 6:27-28).
The Charleston shooter showed hate. He revealed his motive was to stir a hatred that would divide the nation. Racism is hatred. Racism is evil. Racism is sin. Dominic Bouck (in the journal First Things, 6/22/15) observes, “By the grace of God, for those at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, violence begets love, racism begets dignity, sin begets grace, hatred begets forgiveness.”
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Rom 12:21). Let us pray that God will redeem an evil situation with a greater good that will unite a divided people & will heal a broken people.
