Once when Jesus was praying in private and His disciples were with Him, He asked them,
“Who do the crowds say I am?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”
“But what about you?” He asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”
If someone where to ask you “Do you know Jesus?”, you would likely answer “Yes, I do!” But the real question, the one that Jesus asks the disciples, is “Do YOU know Jesus?” In other words, do you personally know Jesus?
You may know that Jesus died for your sins, that He rose from the grave, that He loves you endlessly, and that He offers eternal life; but think about this- why do you believe these things? I would venture to say that most people in our neck of the woods believe these things simply because it is what they have always been taught. They’ve never known anything different. If you think about it, they simplistically believe what others have taught them about Christ, without ever forming their own opinions from personal study and experience. If you are completely honest with yourself, maybe this describes you as well. I’m not saying that learning from others is a bad thing, because Truth is true no matter who teaches it. What I am saying is that unless you spend the time and effort to study things personally, how can you ever truthfully answer Jesus’ follow up question- “Who do YOU say that I am?” Unless you study for yourself, you will only be able to honestly tell what other people have told you about Jesus.
This summer, you have the opportunity to study the life of Jesus personally and intimately. Beginning tonight, Wednesday June 3, I will be leading a Bible study called “Knowing Him”. It is NOT a series of lessons that I am teaching and you just sit and listen. It is a 50 day devotional guide that will walk YOU through studying the life of Christ in a more intimate way than you ever have before. Even if you can’t join us tonight, you can start this devotional book at any time and work through it on your own pace. I STRONGLY encourage you to come talk to me about getting started in the “KNOWING HIM” study. It could very well change your relationship with Christ!
Also, beginning this Sunday morning, I am preaching a 2 part series entitled “Do you know Him?”. We will be dissecting this issue of having a personal relationship with Jesus, and studying ways in which we can increase our depth and intimacy with Christ. Please don’t miss this opportunity to get at the heart of answering Jesus’ question from Luke 9!
